![]() Cardin, for example, wanted to completely ignore the female form in favor of a more structural, architectural unisex look. There was also a heavy focus on the development of new silhouettes and shapes, particularly those with clean lines and boxy, geometric contours. This aesthetic was championed by the use of accessories such as sharp-shaped chin-strap bonnets, bright plastic visors, and space-hardy goggles. When traditional fabrics were used, they were often manipulated to invoke unusual textures. Other space age designers included synthetic fabrics such as nylon, corfam, lurex, and spandex, as well as other non-cloth materials like PVC, paper, aluminum, and polyester. His first show in 1966 was rather aptly titled “Twelve Unwearable Dresses in Contemporary Materials” and featured the first of his now emblematic metal-linked dresses. Rabanne altogether avoided traditional fabrics in favor of plastics and metals strung together with wire and fastened with glue. As absurd as that sounds, it’s kind of perfect. Rabanne, on a much more curious front, claimed that in one of his past lives he had traveled to Earth from a planet called Altair to organize civilization on our planet 78,000 years ago. Also infatuated with space travel, Pierre Cardin visited NASA and tried on the space suit worn on the moon by Neil Armstrong. André Courrèges was so incredibly devoted to the future of space travel that he was personally invited by NASA to visit Cape Canaveral. ![]() Designers took inspiration from things as real as the revolutionary 1961 Soviet-crewed spaceflight Vostok 1 and as fictional as Forbidden Planet, Lost in Space, and Flight to Mars. The movement fed on fantasies of flying cars, unknown alien civilizations, and men stretching their legs on every moon and planet they could find. Hot on the heels of the Cold War and international Space Race, it found inspiration in the exploration of unimaginable futures and the immeasurable vastness of our universe. ![]() Though the space age movement technically began in the 1950s, it flourished in the ‘60s. Helmed by Paco Rabanne and Jacques Fonteray, Barbarella’s costume design serves to flawlessly encapsulate the invigorating aesthetics of the space age movement. The film’s moral revelations, however, have nothing on the boundless provocativity of its costume design, which practically invented molded body plates and chainmail dresses. Both Fonda and Vadim were emphatic that Barbarella had no sense of guilt about her body or bold sexuality. Barbarella (Jane Fonda) herself is a scantily clad space-traveler of the 41st century whose sexuality and freeness are impossible to measure against our contemporary morality. It cares more about sex politics than elevating what was a largely neglected genre because Vadim wanted a playful spectacle rather than a cerebral exercise. Roger Vadim’s 1968 space drama Barbarella takes kitschy sci-fi to an alternate dimension, one of campy eroticism.

Instead, I was greeted with this incredibly rich world where sentient AI behave suspiciously like the humans who created them. I expected to launch this game, knock a few items off the shelves in this pretty cyberpunk-inspired city, and little else. I think, surprisingly, I may have expected too little from Stray. However, when a cat is a primary protagonist, you must temper your expectations somewhat regarding gameplay. They are known for publishing games with thoughtful and engaging stories. With titles like What Remains of Edith Finch and 12 Minutes under their belt, my expectations for a narrative-driven game published by Annapurna Interactive, even from a new studio, were relatively high. That’s not to say there are not more complex puzzles, especially in later levels when stealth comes into play, and a few chase sequences also add some much-needed tension to the gameplay. Need to break into a hat store and steal a hardhat? There’s a box for that. Need to destroy a computer system’s wiring? That’s what cats’ claws are made for. ![]() While many games may want players to think outside the box to overcome a puzzle, Stray oftentimes wants you to just get in the box like a dang cat would. Obstacles presented to a cat must be overcome like a cat, as well, and that leads to some clever puzzle design. Stacks of books are ripe to be kicked over when leaping from one to another, rugs and couches are just begging to be clawed, and the right nap spot is just waiting for you to find it. ![]() Paint cans can be playfully knocked off of ledges and walking through the paint leaves a little trail of paw prints behind. Moments like this continue to crop up throughout the game to remind us that while the player may be aware of the events that are ongoing, the actual protagonist is simply a cat with feline whims and needs. Early on, we see companion drone B-12 give the stray a cat harness and in true cat-like fashion, the tabby crouches into an unsatisfied position and then flops over onto its side, expressing its displeasure for the new accessory. We see some of the best cat-like behavior from our protagonist during the little moments, where Stray’s gameplay shines the brightest. Overall, the story does not overstay its welcome with its estimated 8-hour runtime, but there are just enough loose ends that I left with more questions than answers. However, many story beats relating to the additional AI characters we encounter are tucked away as hidden collectibles that can be easily missed in a blind playthrough. The narrative relies heavily on discovery and uncovering details through exploration, with B-12’s memories being accessible through an in-game menu as they are unlocked. As players uncover the events that led to B-12 taking their place in the companion drone, they also begin to uncover the history of what happened to the humans and how the sentient AI remains. The screens are under the control of a being known as B-12, a mysterious AI that takes the form of a companion drone and accompanies the cat on its adventure. However, it soon becomes apparent that the little cat’s adventure is about more than just their hopeful family reunion, as flashing screens begin to provide up-to-the-minute guidance on where the cat should go to find safety from foes. Stray’s story seems simple enough at first glance. ![]() However, the absence of closed captioning can make it difficult for hard-of-hearing players to know if the cat has meowed (a life-saving measure at times) or may cause them to miss audio cues for events like doors or windows opening momentarily. There is no voice acting, and given Stray’s dialogue takes place via text boxes, subtitles may seem unnecessary. Unfortunately, there are no options for closed captioning. There are a handful of accessibility options, including a slider for motion blur and options to add or remove the reticule, HUD, and other prompts. For those using a DualSense controller with their PC, Stray does also utilize haptic feedback. On PC, Stray does feature full controller support - going so far as to recommend that it plays best with a gamepad - and even includes matching on-screen button inputs when using an Xbox controller. It’s not yet widespread, as I found out later in the week when my flight home did not offer the service. Of course, for that to be practical SWA is going to have to install wifi on more of their aircraft. It would be a little more secure, and allow the flight and wifi to be on the same bill for expense purposes. That would spare me having to get out a credit card and filling out a login while on-board the aircraft. The service might be more convenient if you could pay for it when you book your flight, and simply be given a token for logging into the captive portal. Many in my immediate vicinity seemed to prefer sleeping. Mine was an early morning flight so I suspect that very few people were using the wifi. I did feel that there was considerable latency to the connection, but nothing that proved to be a problem. It was fast enough to be useful, which was all that mattered. I didn’t bother trying to conduct any performance tests. I checked my personal email via the web, worked on some blog related goodies and spent some time in the VUC irc channel on Freenode.Net. Over the course of the 3 hour flight I logged into our corporate VPN and used Outlook to check my company email. Some aspect of the SWA banner or frame structure interfered with Enthinnai such that I could not engage in a text based chat session with Aswath. It was a completely full aircraft and I didn’t want to be the jerk who started to have a “phone call” in public. Aswath tried to establish a voice chat over the service but lacking for a headset I thought better of it and disabled voice chat. When I tweeted about Skype not working Aswath Rao responded and asked if I could try his Enthinnai service.Īfter some initial fumbling with an OpenID login I found that I could connect to Enthinnai. In contrast, my Twitter client ( Seemsic Desktop) worked just fine. The Skype client that was already running on my netbook didn’t even show by buddy list. I noted that Skype would not even login over the SWA wifi. It’s not like their branding needs the help…I’m already on the airplane! That anything they do interferes with the use of the service is working against their own self-interest by devaluing the service. There’s really no reason for such a banner to be persistently displayed. The page was somewhat mangled and not really usable. Even so I found that the banner caused a problem using Google Reader. On the Mini 5102 with a larger screen, they’re much less intrusive. On my old netbook (HP 2140) with a screen size of 1024 x 600 pixels such banners were seriously annoying. It stayed there even if I opened multiple windows, or multiple tabs. However, a Southwest Airlines banner remained at the top of the web browser the entire duration of the session. Having made the payment I was allowed to browse locations beyond the login screen. ![]() It’s cheaper than buying a mixed drink on-board.
